When it does come to a showdown in a game of Seven card stud, one is well served to know the rankings of hands, as opponents like nothing better than being asked what beats what. While some players will actually be honest about it, others will simply take their opponent’s money and run, so to speak, before they can find out that they have been had.
Players should therefore make sure they know the rankings of hands off by heart, in order to protect themselves from such deception and be successful in games of Seven Card Stud.
In addition, it also helps to know the rankings of hands when selecting starting hands. These include, among other, hands where the lowest card is higher than any of the other player’s visible cards, three card flushes, suited connectors, three card straights, medium to high pairs in the pocket or split pairs, etc, to name but a few of the better ones.
Of course there are exceptions, but in general the better the starting hand, the better the chance of winning a game. Knowing these hands, and the rankings of hands at the end of a game of Seven Card Stud poker is the only way a player can hope to be successful, meaning rankings of hands shoud definitely be memorised.
Seven Card Stud Rankings of Cards
The highest ranked hand is the straight flush, consisting of five consecutive cards of one suit, such as the ten, Jack, Queen, King and Ace of a suit, which happens to be the royal flush and is the highest ranking straight flush available.
The next position in the rankings of hands is taken by four of the same rank card, such as foour Kings, for instance. This hand is often called a quad.
The Full House, also frequently referred to as a full boat, consists of three cards of one denomination and two of a second, like three Jacks and two nines, for example. Should two Full Houses be present, the one with the highest cards forming the set of three wins.
Seven Card Stud’s fourth good hand is a flush, where five cards of a single suit, not in sequence, are held. With two or more flushes, the flush containing the highest ranked card takes the win.
A straight of non suited cards represents the next in the list of rankings of cards in Seven Card Stud poker. The highest ranking straight is the Ten, Jack through to Ace run. This is called Broadway, while the lowest straight, A through to five (aces may count as high or low in Seven Card Stud straights) is the lowest straight known a the bicycle or the wheel.
A set or trip in Seven Card Stud games is a set of three cards of the same rank, while a two pair is obviously a combination of two pairs. Again, if several hands with two pairs exist, the highest pair determines the winner.
A pair of cards is one of the lowest hands a game of Seven Card Stud could possibly be won with. Should two hands with a single pair make it to the showdown, the ranking of th highest card in each hand will decide who wins the game.
Finally, if nobody holds any of the above mentioned hands, the highest ranking cards in all hands are compared and the highest card takes the pot.
